The HSLDA essay contest is one of the most well-known scholarship opportunities in the homeschool community. Each year, a new topic is announced, and students submit original essays that are judged on content, organization, style, and mechanics. Winners receive cash prizes and recognition from one of the largest homeschool advocacy organizations in the country. Past topics have included themes related to freedom, education, family, and civic responsibility.
This is an excellent opportunity for high school students to build their writing portfolios and earn scholarship money for college. Even if your student doesn’t win, the experience of writing a formal essay for a competition is valuable preparation for college applications and academic writing.
